| On April 7, 1844 Smith delivered a funeral sermon known as the King Follett Discourse in which he taught that God was once a man and that men could become gods. That seems pretty clear. So why do modern Mormons, and even some evangelicals, deny that this is a teaching of the LDS church?

| Devout Mormons will answer the question in our title differently than an evangelical Christian. While some think that Joseph Smith’s doctrine of God (“God Himself was once as we are now and is an exalted man”) is not taught in Mormonism today, we have seen that it is an integral part of Mormon theology. It is also a vital part of the LDS doctrine of “eternal progression.”
