A John Ankerberg Show viewer asks: “The Witnesses claim to be serious students of the Bible, like the Bereans, but are they really like the Bereans?”
This is a great question. They really don’t. They study Watchtower material and use Watchtower books to study. In the late 1970s and early 1980s some Jehovah’s Witnesses started studying the Bible without Watchtower materials and becoming Bereans but the result was they also started leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses. In response the Watchtower published the article “Avoid Independent Thinking” in the January 15, 1983 Watchtower. Bob Gray did a fine job of addressing this on his Doc Bob blog article, Perhaps the most concise and accurate definition of a cult was formulated by Alan Gomes in Avoid Independent Thinking.
