Those who accept the view of Darwinian evolution have long claimed future evidence would provide missing fossils to support their assessment. However, the latest scientific evidence shows a wide variety of life forms appearing at the same time, with no previous evolutionary forms, causing scientists to reconsider views regarding the origin of life on earth.
For example, in the upcoming series on The John Ankerberg Show with Dr. Stephen Meyer called “The Mystery of the Missing Fossils,” he discusses the importance of the Cambrian explosion. This find, involving a wide variety of advanced life forms appearing in the same time period without precursors, offers a significant problem for the theory of Darwinian evolution. There are no missing fossils. Instead, a diverse group of fossils appear with many highly developed life forms.
In addition, recent information regarding the complexity of cells (human as well as other species) further complicates the view of Darwinian evolution. The multitude of precise “code” or information present in one cell is vastly more multifaceted than the world’s most advanced computer systems.
Further, the theory of adaptation or mutation that supposedly results in marcroevolution (evolution from one species to another) and “survival of the fittest” fails in light of recent discoveries. In contrast, when a single DNA marker is changed, the resulting mutation can be disastrous. Rather than an improvement in evolution, any mutation causes damage that instead keeps it from flourishing or serving as the “fittest” species.
What, then, does the evidence reveal? First, it is clear that time plus chance plus random mutation will not result in the development of one life form to another that improves over time. Second, even if it did (and it does not), this still does not explain the source of the origin of life and the complexity of information found within even the most basic organisms.
While some secular scientists have begun to resort to elaborate theories of life forms coming to earth from other planets or even other universes (utilizing the multiverse theory), the end result is the same: What is the source of the origin of life? The fossil record points toward the need for an outside, powerful, intelligent source to create all forms of life.
At this point, Darwinian evolutionists often claim Christians “jump to God” as the source of life when there are weaknesses or a lack of details in existing scientific information. However, the conclusion of an outside source required for life is not based solely on Scripture, but is actually based on the latest scientific evidence. The information points to the need to for an ultimate, originating source of complex intelligence outside of the known universe.
This view has become popularly known as Intelligent Design. Dr. Stephen Meyer, co-founder of the Intelligent Design movement, notes that the scientific information points toward an Intelligent Designer as the best explanation for the existence of life. It is not a “crutch” Christians use to promote a biblical worldview; Intelligent Design offers the best conclusion based on the latest data.
For the Christian, Intelligent Design affirms the opening words of Genesis: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” An all-powerful Creator provides an explanation that is both biblically and scientifically consistent.
Interestingly, the discoveries pointing toward an Intelligent Designer are helpful to those holding to many views of creation within Christianity. Whether a person believes the world was created in six, 24-hour days, over long periods of time, or accepts some other variation that involves direct creation by God (while rejecting macroevolution), one can find support from the latest scientific information.
Why is this important for Christians today? First, the best scientific evidence affirms the biblical message of a Creator God. Second, recent discoveries help show the great consistency between accurate science and biblical truth. Third, Intelligent Design should encourage those in scientific fields (and those who wish to pursue these fields in the future) to further see the connections between their work and their Christian faith. Fourth, a caring, intelligent Creator reveals the love God has for His creation, a love later displayed through the coming of Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
