5 Reasons Truth Still Matters
Does truth still matter? It seems like we increasingly hear people say things like, “You have your truth; I have my truth.” Others suggest, “Well, that may be true for you, but not for me.” Some have called this the privatization of truth. In other words, people are choosing what they believe is true, defining truth rather than discovering it.
But truth still matters. We wouldn’t respond to a doctor’s cancer diagnosis as, “It’s true for you, but not for me.” We wouldn’t expect to add directions to our GPS and hear, “Choose your own path; they all lead to the same place.” Instead, we discover the Bible offers a clear picture of what truth is and why it matters.
Scripture teaches what is called objective truth. In other words, there are some things that are objectively true for all people in all places and times. Lying is wrong. Loving your neighbor as yourself is right. This stands in contrast with the growing emphasis on subjective truth, the idea that truth is defined by an individual based on personal choice or circumstances.
A close look at the Bible notes these five reasons truth still matters:
Reason #1: Truth reveals who God is and what he has done.
“This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him” (Psalm 18:30).
Reason #2: Truth defines right and wrong.
“The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever” (Psalm 119:160).
Reason #3: Truth explains how to spend eternity with God.
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).
Reason #4: Truth shows how to be forgiven of wrongs.
“…you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
Reason #5: Truth provides wisdom for living a life of impact.
“Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment” (Proverbs 12:19).
Where Scripture speaks on matters of truth, truth matters. We need not define truth to fit our lives, but rather must conform our lives to fit His truth.
