Can You Ever Know Enough About God?
Can you ever know enough about God? In his book Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit, Francis Chan asks this provocative question: “Is it possible to get enough or even too much God? Is there a point when a person can be satisfied with the amount of intimacy, knowledge, and power of God he or she experiences?”[1] He responds to his own question by adding, “I don’t see how there can be, because doesn’t every encounter with God only cause us to thirst for Him more?”[2]
The Psalms illustrate this perfectly. Again and again we hear David calling out for more of God:
- Whom have I in heaven but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth (Psalm 73:25)
- My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God? (Psalm 42:2)
- Oh God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, in a dry and weary land where there is no water (Psalm 63:1)
Isaiah cried out, “At night my soul longs for You, indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently” (Isaiah 26:9)
Is that your testimony as well? If not, follow the advice of Isaiah who urges,
“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon” (Isaiah 55:6-7).
Chan encourages us to continue to seek more of God when he says, “as believers we can never be ‘done’ with God. He is infinite and we are finite; there will always be more of His character to discover, more of His love to experience, and more of His power to use for His purposes.”[3]
As the deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God (Psalm 42:1)
