Hiding God’s Word – Regarding Faithfulness

I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

For many years I have been trying to wrap my brain around the extent of God’s faithfulness. Here’s how Paul described it to Timothy:

“Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself” (2 Timothy 2:11-13).

Faithfulness is not just what God does, it is what He is! The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia says this about faithfulness:

“Faithfulness is one of the characteristics of God’s ethical nature. It denotes the firmness or constancy of God in His relations with men, especially with His people. It is, accordingly, one aspect of God’s truth and of His unchangeableness. God is true not only because He is really God in contrast to all that is not God, and because He realizes the idea of Godhead, but also because He is constant or faithful in keeping His promises, and therefore is worthy of trust. God, likewise, is unchangeable in His ethical nature. This unchangeableness the Scripture often connects with God’s goodness and mercy, and also with His constancy in reference to His covenant promises, and this is what the Old Testament means by the Faithfulness of God.”[1]

Lamentations 3:22-23 declares: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

But God has also indicated to us that He desires faithfulness in His people. It’s listed as one of the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). 

So, from the verses listed below, choose a few to memorize so that they will be in your heart every day, every minute, to remind you to be faithful before the God who is always, always faithful.

Psalm 31:23 – Love the Lord, all his faithful people! The Lord preserves those who are true to him, but the proud he pays back in full.

Proverbs 28:20 – A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

Luke 16:10-12 – Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

Deuteronomy 7:9 – Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

Proverbs 20:6 – Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find?

Psalm 101:6 – My eyes will be on the faithful in the land, that they may dwell with me; the one whose walk is blameless will minister to me.

1 Corinthians 4:2 – Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

Galatians 5:22-23 – But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

2 Timothy 2:13 – if we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot disown himself.

1 Peter 4:10 – Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.
