The New World Religion – Part 4 – A Spiritual/Political Alliance
Last month’s article examined the Vatican’s ecumenical/interfaith efforts to unify the world’s religions. The Holy See expects to finally achieve its goals through its upcoming “Great Jubilee of the Year 2000” celebration, which includes a scheduled peace mission by the Pope to the Middle East next year. Although creating a new religious order demands the support of the world’s most influential “spiritual” leaders, it will also require the assistance of some strategic political allies who share the same vision.
Among the individuals and organizations working with the Pope to establish the new global civilization are Robert Muller, the United Nations, and Mikhail Gorbachev. As a top U.N. official and a devout Catholic, Robert Muller was appointed to oversee Pope John Paul’s first visit to the U.N. in 1979. Anticipating this major event, Muller wrote,
- I expect the Pope to lift the hearts of all international servants of the UN and of its specialized agencies and programs…bring forth new visions in philosophy, sociology, ideology and spirituality centered on the UN’s noble objective of “unity in diversity.”
Muller was not disappointed by the Pope’s mission. In his address before the U.N. General Assembly, John Paul offered the following words of endearment and encouragement:
- As a universal community embracing the faithful…the Church is deeply interested in the existence and activity of the Organization whose very name tells us that it unites and associates nations and States. It unites and associates: it does not divide and oppose. This is the real reason, The essential reason, for my presence among you.
Muller is aware of the Vatican’s special partnership with the U.N. Describing this unique alliance he states:
- The social experience of the Church vastly surpasses that of the young United Nations and its agencies. This is why the Holy See has become so close to the United Nations, offering its vision, help and experience in the solution of most difficult world problems…What marvelous opportunities the UN, its agencies and its world conferences offer Catholics to participate in the Making of a better world! The Holy See has fully understood it and maintains important missions at the seats of all the UN agencies. His Holiness is always ready to help the United Nations in its endeavors…
Aware of this spiritual/political alliance, former U.N. Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld articulated that “there were two Popes on this planet: a spiritual Pope in Rome and a civilian Pope in New York, namely, the Secretary-General of the UN.” Mikhail Gorbachev holds a similar view regarding the position of the Pope and the U.N. secretary-general. He considers Pope John Paul II as “the world’s highest moral authority.” And though Gorbachev is not the leader of the United Nations, he has been working closely with this global governing body on the implementation of The Earth Charter. (This Charter has been dubbed by U.N. reformer Maurice Strong as “a Magna Carta for Earth.”)
Together, Pope John Paul and Mikhail Gorbachev have already received credit for bringing an end to the Cold War, and now, together they are building the new world order. Gorbachev’s relationship to the Pope was made evident during their first meeting in Rome on December 1, 1989. At that time Gorbachev knelt at the pope’s feet and “asked pardon for all the crimes he had committed in his life.” During that historic meeting, Pope John Paul invited the Russian leader to join him in ending global confrontation and building “universal solidarity.” They have been in close contact ever since.
Gorbachev describes his special affection for this Pope:
- I have carried on an intensive correspondence with Pope John Paul II since we met at the Vatican in December 1989…The sense of mutual affection and understanding which resulted from our meeting is to be found in each of our letters.
- I cannot help but say that we share a desire to move forward and complete what we began together…
- When I was with him, I realized that the pope had also played a role in what we came to call the new political thinking…
- What I have always held in high esteem about the pope’s thinking and ideas is their spiritual content, their striving to foster the development of a new world civilization.
- It can be said that everything which took place in Eastern Europe in recent years would have been impossible without the pope’s efforts and the enormous role, including the political role, which he played in the world arena.
After years of working together, Mikhail Gorbachev continues to regard John Paul II as his closest ally in building the new planetary civilization.
The current effort to achieve a world government and religion reminds one of the prophetic warnings of Revelation 13 and 14 concerning the coming system of the beast and false prophet. Although this spiritual/political system may at first seem attractive, Scripture tells us that it will be ruthless once in place. The spiritual deception associated with it will be unparalleled (Matthew 24). Satan will use this counterfeit system to rule the world and gain the worship of man. However, his time will be cut short when Jesus Christ returns (2 Thessalonians 2).
Being aware of this fact and the ultimate destiny of this earthly system, let us not be intimidated by the manipulations of Satan; rather, let us draw comfort from knowing that Jesus Christ is still in control and will have the final say. In Him our eternity is secure!
- For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8: 38-39
