Astrology and the Christ-follower – Part 3

Part 3 – Guidance for the Future – God’s Way

In this final article on astrology, we will show you that God gives you a far better way to get wisdom and guidance for your future than by looking at the stars. We have already seen that astrology is an occult practice. As such, the source of any information you get through it is at best suspect, and at worst can be (and often is) actually downright harmful to you. That’s why God warns against it.

But you should know by now that when God warns us against something it’s not to deprive us of something “good,” but rather to protect us from something that could harm us. And He always gives us something better! He tells us in Jeremiah 29:11, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’”

I’m going to refer you back to a series of programs Dr. John Ankerberg taped a few years ago with guests Sunder and Shyamala Krishnan entitled “Follow Me!: Experiencing the Joy of Walking with Jesus.”[1]

One of the things they discussed is how to discover God’s will for your life. The guides they gave in that session fit well here, so I’d like to lay out a few of them for you.

First, we can and should consult God’s Word, the Bible. Why is that important? Sunder Krishnan says,

“Well, first of all, it trains our mind to think biblically. What happens with most people, when they want to make up their mind and discern God’s will on a particular situation, they suddenly pick up the Bible and say, okay, what does God’s Word say about this? And as often as not they are likely to either not find it or come to the wrong conclusion. And so I find that regularly reading all of God’s Word just gets us familiar with the ways and the mind and the thoughts of God and enables us to interpret the present situation.”

Shyamala Krishnan went on to say,

“You know, we need to come with the mindset that God actually does want to reveal His will to us. In the book of Hebrews, we read that he who comes to God ‘must believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who diligently, earnestly seek him’ (Hebrews 11:6). And then Jesus said, ‘if you seek me you will find me,’ (Jeremiah 29:13), ‘if you ask you will receive, if you knock the door will be opened’ (Matthew 7:7-12). But, you know, ‘You have not, because you ask not’ (James 4:2). So it occurred to me that we need to come with that attitude of saying that we have a God who actually loves to reveal His will. He’s not a God who wants to take us through a maze, or say, ‘You go figure,’ He actually says, ‘Come, ask of me and I will reveal it to you.’”

The next guide we will mention is wise counsel. God has brought people into our lives who have perhaps a greater wisdom, or more life experience, or a deeper walk with God who may be able to listen to our questions and give us godly guidance and clear answers to the questions we may have about our future. Shyamala Krishnan gives examples of the “do’s and don’ts” of wise counsel from the lives of King David and Rehoboam in the Old Testament:

“One of the things that struck me about King David over and over again, it says that he not only inquired of God, but he also had a wise counselor in the man Ahitophel. And it said he gave him advice as one who listened to God. And so I think it is very important when we are seeking wise counsel, that we not just go to people who will say what we want them to say.

“I was thinking of Rehoboam. You know, when his father died, I think it was Jeroboam who came to him and suggested something, made him an offer. And Rehoboam went to his elders. They told him it was a good suggestion. He didn’t like what they said, so who did he go to? He went to his peers who advised him completely the opposite. And it ended up he did something that he never should have done.

“So when we are seeking wise counsel we need to go to people who may not necessarily say what we want them to say, but have a sense that these people have spoken the mind and the will of God.”

And finally, we cannot and should not neglect prayer as an effective way of seeking guidance for our future. God Himself tells us in James 1:5-6, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

Sunder Krishnan comments,

“I think prayer is important for three reasons: God is the source of wisdom, so we ask him; number two, it clarifies our wrong motives sometimes about ruling out certain things or wanting certain things; and thirdly, above all it gets us to that frame of mind which says, ‘Lord, above all we want your will more than anything else.’”

Let me end by listing just a few of the verses in the Bible that give us the sure promise from God that He knows our ways; that He is intimately involved with our lives and all that comes our way; and that He has not left us to blindly walk through life alone. You may want to memorize some (or all!) of these so they can be part of your arsenal when your future seems uncertain.

  • Psalm 25:4-5, 9-10 – Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long….  He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
  • Psalm 27:14 – Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
  • Psalm 32:8 – I [God] will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
  • Psalm 119:105 – Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.
  • Proverbs 2:7 – He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity.
  • Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight [or “will direct your paths”].
  • Isaiah 58:11 – The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame.
  • Matthew 7:7-11 – Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!
  • Luke 1:79 – [God will] guide our feet into the path of peace.
  • John 16:13 – But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.
  • James 1:5-6 – If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.
